Ek Balam

Culture, cenote and jungle feeling

In the footsteps of the Mayas

Ek Balam is an archaeological site where the first excavations only started in 1997. Not all structures have been uncovered yet, but the part that has already been restored is remarkable. Ek Balam is also characterized by the wonderful stucco reliefs on the 4th floor of the "Acropolis". And a few meters further up you can enjoy a breathtaking view over the jungle.

Subterranean water-filled caves have formed throughout the Yucatan Peninsula over the past million years. These cenotes can be labyrinths, they can be semi-open, open or closed. We visit a closed cave.

Punta Laguna is part of a 5000 hectare federally protected area known as Otoch Ma'ax yetel Kooh, which in the Mayan language means "The Home of the Monkey and the Puma". Since 1950, the Mayan families have been protecting the reserve, where animals such as spider monkeys, howler monkeys, birds, jaguars and cougars live in complete freedom.

Detailed tour description:

We start very early in the morning on this excursion to reach Ek Balam in time for the opening.

Together we explore this impressive archaeological site and climb the 32 m high "Acropolis" to enjoy a wonderful view over the jungle. No less impressive is the 4th floor, where we can marvel at the very well-preserved stucco. During our approximately 2-hour stay at the excavation site, we learn the most important background information about the buildings, the Mayas, their culture and way of life.

Afterwards we visit an underground freshwater spring, a cenote and refresh ourselves in the clear water.

Our next stop is a rustic, typical Mexican restaurant, where we are served typical dishes.

Now that we are strengthened, we continue into the jungle. There we can first attend the ceremony of a shaman before we start our tour through the jungle. We will be accompanied by a local guide who will of course also help us to find the monkeys. Both spider monkeys and howler monkeys make their home in Punta Laguna.

We'll round off our stay with a bit of adrenaline and "fly" across the lagoon on a zipline. At the end we take a canoe trip across the idyllic lagoon and can listen to the chirping of the birds or the roaring of the monkeys.

After a varied, active day, we will take you back to your hotel.

Important information:

  • Riding the zipline is voluntary and only possible up to a weight of 130 kg

Don't forget to take with you:

  • Swimwear, towel, sunglasses, sun hat, sandals

  • closed-toe shoes and sandals/flip-flops

  • comfortable clothing

  • maybey a camera

  • money for personal expenses and tips, if necessary, e.g. for our driver
